Ängsbacka is a course and festival centre in northern Europe, located in the beautiful deep forests of Värmland in Sweden, halfway between Stockholm and Oslo. We offer courses and festivals for creative and playful people who want to live a more conscious life, live from the heart and care for our planet.

Our vision is to be a leading meeting point for sustainable human development, and a source of inspiration for social, personal and global well being, bringing people to the realization of whom and what we really are beyond thoughts and concepts.

Since 1997 thousands of people have been touched by the warm, open, loving atmosphere during workshops, festivals and volunteer experiences here at Ängsbacka. Hundreds of people have lived and worked here over the past 20 years, bringing their gifts and contributing to the unique Ängsbacka magic.

Ängsbacka is run by a staff of approximately twenty people, and between 25 - 40 volunteers that live here all year around.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world”

– Mahatma Gandhi

The dynamic volunteer team at Ängsbacka is a place where you can dive into an international, community experience rich in learning and personal development. Our aim is to provide the opportunity to develop personal, interpersonal and practical skills that support a more sustainable way of living, socially, culturally, economically and ecologically.

Our volunteers are in a unique position to access and contribute to a daily program of activities that support growth and development. The day begins with the possibility for yoga or meditation practice, and continues in the afternoon and evening with a variety of items such as dance, music, men’s and women’s circles, tantric and shamanic practices, massage, open stage and many other creative and connecting forms.

As a volunteer you are here not only to serve your own personal development, but also the development of the many hundreds of participants who join our courses and trainings throughout the year. Service to the course participants means giving the gift of providing a warm, safe, clean and nourishing environment through our work as kitchen and housekeeping volunteers, and providing a held, nurturing and respectful space within which they can relax and unfold.

Alongside the volunteer program we are hosts for the European Solidarity Corps program, or ESC in short. By joining the ESC you commit to being at Ängsbacka for either six or twelve months, working with outreaching projects. The next opportunity to join for 6 months service will be in the autumn of 2019. We are looking for people who are interested in organic growing, outreach activities, serving in and developing our café, and project & event management.

“Be realistic: Plan for a miracle”

Volunteer service at Ängsbacka is based on 5 hours of work per day with 2 days off per week. Volunteers usually join either the kitchen or housekeeping team for the duration of their stay and are scheduled to work 5 shifts per week.

With 5 hours a day 5 days a week focused on your working tasks you have ample opportunity to learn about your personal relationship to work, develop a variety of ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ skills, and about how to be present with what it is to be in service.

Morning meetings and sharing are not included in this time.

Sharing Groups

A foundational part of the Ängsbacka experience is the collective practice of sharing.

Sharing groups are usually based on your working group and are composed of 4 - 6 people. The purpose of the sharing group is to give space for each of the members to share what is alive in them in the moment.

Sharing is a sacred space, meaning that whatever arises in your circle is confidential; it is neither commented on during, nor taken up after the sharing is closed. Everyone in the group will have the same amount of time available to them. Volunteers meet in their sharing groups twice per week.

Guidelines & Policies

At Ängsbacka we have developed a set of 12 Guidelines stating how we aspire to live and work as a community.

We are a 100% drug and alcohol free environment. If you are found under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we will ask you to leave immediately.

EVS Volunteer

Being a volunteer in Angsbacka is a great way to enjoy simple yet meaningful jobs. When I work in the kitchen, I love to wake up in the morning to cook because I know it will bring pleasure to my friends to make great food!
Individual growth, community spirit, time to think about what you really want, people here to support you... If you're longing for that, don't hesitate, come!

EVS Volunteer

Living at Angsbacka for me is like a seed that dares to start growing underneath the earth; not knowing what will happen, but curious and passionate about growing in to a beautiful flower.
The simple daily structure, having less responsibilities than you would have at home, the beautiful workshops that are being offered every day, and living with loving, caring people creates a space to grow. Then you can shine light on things you maybe didn't have the time for before.
This is not always easy; it can be confronting, but I think it is very useful to get to know yourself and to become the person you really want to be.

Kitchen Volunteer

At Ängsbacka, there are so many opportunities to get to meet a variety of people and share each other’s passions.
It's an extremely rich environment, where everyone contributes to creating a peaceful place on earth. With many workshop and events organized for the volunteers, we grow in ourselves, inside and outside.
